This webinar explored the medicines use and safety needs in schools, including special schools, and how an innovative project delivered pharmacy expertise to these settings.
Why it’s important
On 1st September 2014, a new duty came into force for governing bodies to make arrangements to support pupils at school with medical conditions.
Within the collaborative commissioning structure between the NHS and Local Authorities for special schools, there has never been a formal pathway to promote or support the need for a pharmacy led medicines optimisation service in schools. With there being no standardised approach to how this is achieved, great variations exist nationally on how this model is being delivered. This includes significant differences in localised areas where some schools have full collaborative working between local authorities and health partners (primarily specialist community nursing services). This compares with other schools having little or no support at all with the need to fund their own health provisions.
Pharmacy professionals have the expertise to support with promoting and ensuring the safe use of medicines in schools.
What was covered?
- A local journey (Kent’s) to a collaborative commissioning model which now includes pharmacy services for special schools.
- Transformation of the pharmacy workforce: developing specialist pharmacy technician and clinical pharmacist roles to support in this niche setting.
- Next steps required to share innovations and spread best practice nationally to support improving equity of access to this type of service for all special schools.
- An opportunity to share your learning and development needs in this area.
