Using tricyclic antidepressants during breastfeeding

31 January 2023Imipramine and nortriptyline are the tricyclic antidepressants of choice. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants only.

Using codeine, dihydrocodeine or tramadol during breastfeeding

17 January 2023Tramadol and dihydrocodeine can be used while breastfeeding for pain control. Codeine should not be used . Advice applies to full term, healthy infants.

Using SSRI antidepressants during breastfeeding

13 January 2023Paroxetine and sertraline are the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) of choice. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants only.

Using chloramphenicol during breastfeeding

16 June 2022Topical chloramphenicol can be used with caution and monitoring. Systemic chloramphenicol is not recommended. Advice applies to full term and healthy infants.

Using gabapentin or pregabalin during breastfeeding

1 March 2022Gabapentin or pregabalin can be taken during breastfeeding and with infant monitoring. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants only.
