About the tool

Purpose

This tool provides options for PERTs by matching a patient’s current therapy against equivalent UK licensed products. It also states the enzymatic constituents by product and individual dose.

Included recommendations

The tool includes recommendations for both children and adults.

Recommendations for children have been developed in close consultation with colleagues from the Neonatal and Paediatric Pharmacy Group; recommendations for adults are as published in the Pancreatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland position statement on the PERT shortage.

Where doses require half capules, this can be achieved by opening the capsule and halving the contents by eye.

The required amount can be given as per the instructions in the BNF, which state:

Manufacturer advises gastro-resistant granules should be mixed with slightly acidic soft food or liquid such as apple juice, and then swallowed immediately without chewing. Capsules containing enteric-coated granules can be opened and the granules administered in the same way. For infants, Creon® Micro granules can be mixed with a small amount of milk on a spoon and administered immediately—granules should not be added to the baby’s bottle.
